Community Meetup with Jenny Chang

On April 12th, Jenny Chang, a Senior Strategist at JOAN Creative, will be presenting on WAP. "WAP: Women Asserting Power" is an exploration of sexuality and power dynamics in music as it relates to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP”: the contextual significance of explicitness in rap music, the history of the word “pussy” in pop culture, the notability of French aristocratic design and Britney Spears’ influence on the video’s aesthetic, and how “WAP” represents the unapologetic reclamation of sexual agency and an alternate social hierarchy in which Black women are the reigning class.

Jenny Chang is a writer, brand strategist, and cultural theorist fascinated by pop culture's intersection with social systems and power structures. She's most well-known in the strategy community for her PowerPoint analyses of TikTok and Gen Z, sexuality and power in Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's "WAP," morality in a pandemic through the lens of The Good Place, and linguistic competence in meme construction and interpretation + the practice of memeing responsibly. She just finished a fellowship with Bitch Media in pop culture criticism, and will be speaking at Digital Void's "Memes and the Metaverse of Madness" event on April 30th. She's originally from California and is on a perpetual quest to find the best soup dumplings and/or truffle tries in New York City.
